SEDGEMOOR FARMHOUSE

We obtained Planning Permission for the remodel and extension of a late Georgian farmhouse in Sedgemoor. Our Client was a Landscape Contractor and asked that we work closely with SEED Landscape to ensure the landscape and house design were integrated and that views into the garden, up to the Mendips and across the Somerset Levels were maximised.

The design includes a contemporary single storey side extension which takes its design cue from the existing garden wall that divides the southern and northern gardens.  The extension appears as a simple stone clad structure with large windows reminiscent of garden wall openings.  Elements of recessed timber cladding break down the visual massing of the façade, visually soften the building and helping to create an understated backdrop for the soft landscaping.  The garden wall continues internally through the extension.

A simple full height glass link connects the extension to the existing house and the existing arched gateway within the garden wall retains the visual connection from the courtyard to the southern garden.

The single storey height and design simplicity of the proposed extension is respectful of and subservient to the existing house.  It is set back from the principle elevation and together with the garage creates a tightly knit collection of buildings which are in keeping with developments along the lane.
